Then, on July 4, 1964, Houston police arrested twenty-four-year-old Melvin Lane Powers at a trailer sales lot, a concern which had been financed by Mossler. Powers, who also used the name Mossler, was the natural nephew of Candy Mossler.

Powers, police announced, had flown to Florida, killed Mossler, then flown back to Houston, all within a forty-eight-hour period. He had repeatedly stabbed his victim, then crushed his head with a giant Coke bottle. They said that the bloody palm print left by the killer matched that of Powers. Further, investigators stated that they had found a note written by Mossler that stated: “If Mel and Candace don’t kill me first, I’ll kill them.”
